ABOUT ABOUT

Employee Wellness Programs ... Good Deeds, Good Business or Both?

Employee wellness programs have grown exponentially in the past decade.  They affect the workplace at multiple levels: hiring policies, health insurance co-payments, absentee rates, and employee retention.

How do these programs affect a firm’s bottom line?  Do programs for smoking cessation, weight reduction and meditation make a financial difference or do they serve better as morale builders?

Our dynamic panel will feature three unique perspectives from three IABCN Member Companies:

Kim Eberbach, Senior Vice President of Corporate and Community Wellness at Independence Blue Cross will lead our discussion.

Kim is responsible for the development and execution of wellness-related strategies and programs for employees, members, and the surrounding community. Kim was previously Vice President of Human Resources for IBC. Prior to joining IBC Kim spent ten years consulting in the arenas of strategic planning, change management, leadership, and process improvement.

Bethany Bullard, Johnson Kendall Johnson

Bethany F. Bullard, CWWS joined Johnson Kendall & Johnson Benefits in September 2009. Prior to joining JKJB she worked in marketing communications for over 12 years servicing several major brands including Black & Decker, Mobil Oil Corporation and Lenox, Inc.

As a Health & Wellness Coordinator, Bethany is responsible for developing integrated, comprehensive health and wellness programs that are effective in managing the direct and indirect costs associated with employee health status. She works with clients to engage senior/middle management, evaluate current wellness culture, and implement risk intervention strategies including the development of value based benefit designs.

Johnson Kendall & Johnson has been recognized as one of Philadelphia’s “Healthiest Companies” by the Philadelphia Business Journal for the last three years.

James Mulcahy, Senior Paralegal Commercial Litigation, Cozen O'Connor

Jim will share his personal story. Below is an excerpt from the Philadelphia Business Journal's article on "Healthiest Employers."

"Cozen O’Connor’s Wellness Program put me on to the right track for a healthier diet and life. In 2010, my onsite biometric testing from the Wellness Program came back great, except for it listed me as a “possible diabetic”.   I, thereafter, followed up with a doctor’s appointment and was able to get on a diabetic diet program and control my blood sugar.  In addition, the Wellness Program assigned me a wellness health coach.   We speak every 6 months to discuss my health and how we can improve my health and my diet.

Since 2010, I have participated in most of all of the firm’s Wellness Program. This includes Weight Watchers, blood pressure checkups, educational presentations and the group walking programs. It has been two years ago this month that I was diagnosed as a diabetic.  It's been a long journey, but I am a much healthier person thanks to the firm’s Wellness program."
